It comes back to me with such clarity. I was 8-years-old. I loved going downstairs to the basement to play. I wasn’t scared of its dark corners or hidden recesses, not at all. I loved how the washer and dryer would make their rhythmic noises. It did a lot to cover up the fighting between mommy and Ray.

That was his name…Ray. Mom met him at a bar one night, brought him home. And then he just never left. He made our home his. He made my mom his. He…he didn’t give a fuck about me. I knew that from the way he’d slap me around. But those slaps weren’t as painful as the verbal abuse that came from him. God, he made me feel like nothing…less than nothing.

I was playing downstairs with my dolls one day when Ray came home. I could tell because he slammed the front door, like always. Then he and mom started to argue. Then there were footfalls on the kitchen floor upstairs. I knew what that meant – someone was about to come downstairs.

I didn’t want Ray to hit me. He always hit me real hard after he’d been out drinking. So I hid in my secret corner, a little dark space between some boxes opposite the washing machine. No one ever looked for me there.

Sure enough, mom started to come downstairs a minute later. She had the laundry basket with her. It wasn’t even half-full. It never was. Mom used laundry as an excuse to get away from Ray, even if it was just downstairs and just for a short time. That’s how much she hated him.

That day, though, Ray followed her. I could tell he’d been drinking a lot by the way he talked. He always talked slower and the words came out all jumbled and weird. Sometimes he’d lose his balance, stagger a bit, even fall down. But that day, he walked fine. On those days I really worried for mom.

Mom was at the washing machine, loading it up, when Ray came up behind her.

“Who’s been over here, you dumb cunt? Who’s been sleeping in our bed?”

“No one, Ray – I swear it!”

“Don’t you fucking lie to me!” Ray shouted, and slapped mom hard across the face.

She falls to her knees to the hard concrete floor. “Please, Ray…there’s only you.”

“Do you love me, baby?” he asks next, looking down at her there, her lip quivering in fear.

“You know I do, baby, you know it!”

“Then show me,” he says.

That’s when mom reaches up and starts to undo his belt. She gets his pants down so that they’re below his knees. Then she starts to…I dunno…move her head back and forth in front of him. I have no idea what’s happening, but Ray seems to like it. He’s not hitting her anymore, at least.

After a couple minutes, Ray starts to moan softly.
